Roger Pertwee is one of the most cited cannabinoid pharmacologists in the world and a pioneer in characterizing the pharmacology of cannabinoid receptors and their ligands. His laboratory at the University of Aberdeen has made seminal contributions to understanding CB1 and CB2 receptor pharmacology, the mechanisms of action of THC and CBD, and the development of cannabinoid receptor ligands as research tools and potential therapeutics. Pertwee has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Key Contributions
1Characterized the pharmacology of CB1 and CB2 receptors in landmark studies
2Demonstrated that CBD is a negative allosteric modulator of CB1 receptors
3Developed the pharmacological classification system for cannabinoid receptor ligands
4Identified the mechanisms underlying THC's psychoactive and therapeutic effects
5Edited the definitive textbook "Cannabinoids" (Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology)
