Does CBD help with athletic recovery and muscle soreness?

8 related studiesEvidence-reviewed by PhD researchers

Research-Based Answer

CBD is widely used by athletes for recovery, but clinical evidence is limited. Theoretically, CBD's anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties could reduce exercise-induced muscle damage and soreness. Preclinical studies show CBD reduces inflammatory markers after exercise in animal models. However, human RCT evidence is sparse. A 2021 randomized crossover trial found CBD did not significantly reduce muscle soreness or improve recovery markers after eccentric exercise in healthy adults. A 2020 study found no effect on cycling performance or perceived exertion. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its prohibited list in 2018, making it legal for competitive athletes. THC remains prohibited in-competition. The main practical concern for athletes is product contamination — many CBD products contain detectable THC that could trigger a positive drug test.
