Is CBD safe for children?

16 related studiesEvidence-reviewed by PhD researchers

Research-Based Answer

CBD safety in children has been most rigorously studied in the context of epilepsy. Epidiolex (pharmaceutical-grade CBD) is FDA-approved for children aged 2+ with Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, with a well-characterized safety profile in this population. Common side effects in pediatric epilepsy trials include somnolence, decreased appetite, diarrhea, and elevated liver enzymes (particularly when combined with valproate). For other pediatric conditions (anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD), evidence is limited to small open-label studies. The safety of consumer CBD products in children is unknown — these products are not regulated for purity, potency, or pediatric safety. Contamination with THC is a documented concern. No CBD product other than Epidiolex should be given to children without physician supervision.
